Hadrian's Wall is a towering achievement of military engineering and a monument to the power of one of the greatest empires in world history. Stretching across the spine of England from the north-east coast to the Irish Sea, the Wall and its related coastal defences extend for over 100 miles (160km). It was more than just a wall: it was a whole military zone designed to control movement across the northern frontier of Roman Britain. Great earthwork and stone barriers survive, along with the remains of forts and temporary camps; watch-towers and fortified gates; civilian settlements; temples, cemeteries and bathhouses; and roads and bridges.

Drawing on the Historic England Archive and those of the county Historic Environment Records, this map is on an Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 base - the ideal scale for walkers. It shows all the elements of the Wall, distinguishing between visible and levelled remains, and pinpoints relevant museums. A brief text explains how to read the map and where to get further information. The World Heritage Site is more accessible than ever before and this map enables you to see the landscape through new eyes.
