Víknaslóðir Trails
The Víknaslóðir Trails
Trails of the Inlets in Iceland’s Eastern Wilderness
Location: East Iceland
Distance: 74 km | 46 miles
Duration: 4 Days
Start/Finish: Seyðisfjörður to Bakkagerði
Tucked away in one of Iceland’s most remote and enchanting corners, Víknaslóðir - the Trails of the Inlets - is a captivating network of hiking routes centered around Borgarfjörður Eystri in the Eastfjords. Offering a blend of wild coastlines, colorful rhyolite mountains, abandoned farms, and peaceful fjords, Víknaslóðir is a hidden gem for hikers seeking solitude and raw natural beauty.
This officially maintained trail system stretches southward along Iceland’s rugged east coast, linking the tiny village of Borgarfjörður Eystri with remote bays like Breiðavík, Húsavík, and Loðmundarfjörður. Trails vary in difficulty and length, ranging from short day hikes to multi-day hut-to-hut adventures, with well-marked paths and basic accommodation in self-service huts along the way.
The area’s landscapes are a breathtaking mix - vibrant volcanic hills, moss-covered valleys, high mountain passes, and black sand beaches meeting the North Atlantic. Wildlife is abundant, with puffins nesting along the cliffs and occasional sightings of reindeer or Arctic foxes.
Víknaslóðir also offers a deep sense of place. You’ll pass old turf ruins from long-deserted farms and walk paths shaped by generations of travel and trade. The area is steeped in folklore and is said to be a haven for Iceland’s hidden people - the Huldufólk.
Accessible from July to early September, the trail system is best suited to well-prepared hikers with good navigation skills, especially in more remote sections. Still, its quiet beauty, dramatic scenery, and cultural richness make it one of Iceland’s most rewarding trekking experiences.
Whether you’re in search of sweeping vistas, tranquil solitude, or a glimpse into Icelandic heritage, the Víknaslóðir Trails delivers all this and more - on trails where nature truly sets the pace.
